Armenian weddings

A lot of people can’t imagine their life without getting married and without their special wedding ceremony. For some people the ceremony has its own beliefs and cultural traditions. I personally like Hindu weddings because it has a lot of beautiful and meaningful traditions. But what about Armenians? How do Armenians celebrate and organize their weddings?

Our traditions are conservative when it comes to family culture and values. In ancient times Armenians thought that autumn and winter were the most suitable months for organizing weddings. In spring and summer, people would get engaged. Unfortunately, there was a tradition where young people didn't have the right to choose their mate on their own. This came from their protective parents who tried to marry their children as soon as possible.

Weddings are usually big, having more than a hundred guests.  An average Armenian wedding can cost a minimum of 5,000 to 10,000 dollars. And the more glamorous can go for 40,000-50,000 dollars. It’s hard for the average citizen to hold even a normal, modest wedding. Many take out loans with high interest rates and then work for several years to clear the debt at the bank.
In my opinion, you shouldn’t waste tons of money on a wedding. Yes, it is fun to wear a wedding dress, to be surrounded by your family and loved ones but you can do all these things without wasting money. Sadly, Armenians like to show off everything. It’s pointless to organize a ceremony just to show your neighbors or relatives that you are capable of doing such things, even when you don’t have enough money. You can use that money to travel with your partner or do other things that make YOU discover yourselves.
